TRANSHUMANCE WITH LIVESTOCK

Transhumance with the cattle of your Maasai family
3 days / 2  nights there

Day 1   -  Hearty breakfast to be enjoyed at dawn, prepared by your chef.

Your host family will come to join you and share a cup of tea, before setting off for the trek.

The track will give you the opportunity to observe a lot of wild animals and birds, in breathtaking landscapes, donkeys will accompany you to transport provisions and your backpacks,  a picnic is planned on the way.

The walk lasts between 4/5 hours, finally at the foot of Mount Gelai, you will see the habitat of your hosts, a cluster of huts built around the enclosures of their cattle, which they call "boma"

On your arrival, you will give yourself a little rest,  then your guide will show you a natural spring water pool, where you can wash or cool off.

Magnificent point of view to observe the animals that live on the banks of this large alkaline lake.

Then after having set up the tents and while your cook is preparing your dinner, it will be time to settle down and get to know the different members of the clan, you will be able to interact, ask your questions, your Maasai guide will be your interpreter. The children will be happy to have you there. 

Around the fire, you will enjoy your dinner under the stars.

Night in a tent or if you wish inside a hut.

Day 2  - 

You will be awakened very early by the cries of the young animals (separated at night from their mothers), but before letting them come together, you will be invited by the "mamas"  milking cattle,  cows, goats, sheep.

Then you will share the Maasai tea, made with freshly harvested and boiled milk. Breakfast by the fire.

Very quickly you have to set off, you will follow the warriors, the women and the children in their daily tasks, to look for wood, to divide and lead the herds in search of food, to make the animals drink.

Your guide will explain the Maasai way of life, their culture, their traditions, the community divided into age groups, the role of each during the different tours  organized along the lake to observe the animals, the collapsed crater, the other bomas.

At the end of the day, you will share the ritual of sacrificing a goat, this role is assigned to the warriors, they will suffocate it, butcher it meticulously in front of you, drink the blood. While the meat is cooking over a wood fire, the warriors will dance, shout and sing their ancestral songs to you.

If you are “vegan” no worries, there will be no goat but lots of vegetables! 

Day 3  - 

After the Maasai morning ritual  and the traditional breakfast, you will wash in the natural swimming pool and go for a walk while waiting for lunch.

After the meal, it will be time to get your things ready to head back home, and thank your hosts.

The warriors and a few donkeys escort you to carry your belongings and equipment.

You will arrive at the Maasai giraffe before sunset.

After this long walk, it will be time to say goodbye to you, a pang in the heart and your head filled with beautiful memories of this human adventure with this people who are at the same time so different and yet so close to us.

A good shower and a good dinner await you!

The price does not include your own transport (4x4) to join us Engaresero village or Maasai giraffe eco lodge ..

Day 1   - 

Very early in the morning, meet in a "boma" of your host family, next to the river of Engaresero, the starting point of the trek.
 

You will have breakfast there while getting to know some of your host family members.  During this time the warriors will load the donkeys and give their cattle drink, which will leave with you on the transhumance.
 

The members of the clan authorized to escort the animals will be happy to accompany them to the place called "Leparakashi".
 

You will start the ascent of more or less 4 hours, with your guide and the cook. Donkeys will carry food, water, camping equipment and your light luggage, Up the hills, you will discover seasonal Maasai habitats,  "Boma", agglomerates of huts built around cattle enclosures that they nickname: "temporary boma" because they do not live permanently on these high plateaus.
 

What they call "the escarpment" is the place of transhumance during the dry seasons, the landscapes are breathtaking. The area is very isolated, there is no water point.  Only the Maasai can live there.
 

After a little rest, with your guide you will set up the tents and prepare your night in a tent (or if you wish inside their hut).

While your cook prepares a nice meal for you, you can cool off with the very little water available up there. You will have to be satisfied with what is necessary in the joy of living.

Once installed, it will be time to settle down and get to know the different members of the clan, you will be able to interact, ask your questions, your Maasai guide will be your interpreter. The children will be happy to have you there. 

You will enjoy your dinner under the stars around a wood fire, the evening will be devoted to talking to you about the Maasai way of life, their culture, their traditions, the community divided into age groups, the role of each of the members.

Day 2  -

Day 3  - 

On the third day, after the Maasai morning ritual  and the traditional breakfast, you take the time to visit the high plateau, and to observe the life of your hosts, until it is time to take your lunch.
 

Then it will be time to unpack the tents and collect the equipment for the return trip.
 

At the beginning of the afternoon, the warriors and their cattle escort you for your descent towards the bed of the river of Engaresero, where the animals will finally be able to drink and on your side finally to refresh you. 

Arriving at the bottom you will already have to say goodbye, a pang in your heart and your head filled with beautiful memories of your human adventure with this people who are at the same time so different and yet so close to us.

A good shower and a good dinner await you!

THE ENCOUNTER

WITH THE MAASAIS IN THE LAKE NATRON CONSERVATION ZONE

The lifestyle of this  tribe  remains deeply rooted in traditions that they  have been practicing for hundreds of years. This stay is a great privilege to come into close contact with them and their environment.

The purpose of this stay is to answer  as needed,  of our western societies  rediscover ancestral values and a lifestyle in harmony  with nature

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is in a tent set up inside the Maasai boma or if you prefer traditional bedding inside a hut, or like the warriors under the stars.  All tents are equipped with  mosquito nets. The toilet is done in the bush like our guests. There is no shower, but you will have a bucket of hot water daily for trekking-style "bathing" or can wash in the river.

THE FOOD

To avoid stomach problems, we have a Maasai cook who prepares your meals. The food is simple but delicious.

You will discover the imagination of your chef in the heart of nature.

All the food is well cooked and we only use boiled water to wash the fruit and wash the dishes. You will be served bottled water, tea and coffee.
